PicLits

This site allows you to choose a background, and then drag and drop OR freestyle write onto the background. The teacher must create an account and students will log in as the teacher, and students can work simultaneously. This site will not let you print the page, but instead, students can learn how to take a screen shot of the Piclic and then paste it into a word document. Crop the Piclit, then enlarge, and now print. * The email function of this tool will not work in Groupwise, but will work on personal email accounts.

http://www.piclits.com/compose_dragdrop.aspx

Instant Poetry Forms

Just fill in the blanks and create a beautiful poem. Print, take a screen shot and add to a Word document with a border.

http://ettcweb.lr.k12.nj.us/forms/newpoem.htm

Storyjumper: http://www.storyjumper.com

The teacher sets up an account for students. This fits in with the Focus area of: Use productivity tools to write a personal experience story on the ways students use technology (from the Integrating Technology into Writing Priorities Chart)

Make Beliefs Comix:

It involves spelling, storytelling, drawing, and sequence skills.  It is a great website for children to create their own comics.  It is an easy to use online program where children choose from a wide selection of characters (including various moods), backgrounds, thought and talking balloons, panel prompts, objects, and senses. Once they are finished they can print their comic strips. The one draw back is that they can not save their work, so you would need to allow time for them to finish the project.

There are also a variety of printable writing prompts.

The Storybook Maker

This is based from Dr. Suess. Student's may need to be familiar with the Who's and Horton to create a story - or they can write a personal experience story on ways students use technology and just use the character's that are available.

http://www.seussville.com/games_hb/storymaker/story_maker.html

Book Report Sandwich

http://www.scholastic.com/kids/homework/sandwich.asp

KidsBlog

KidsBlog tools allow students to publish posts and participate in discussions within a secure classroom blogging community. Teachers maintain complete control over student blogs. Classes can be set up with no student email addresses. SET UP IS EASY. Images can be uploaded. Links can be added.
http://kidblog.org/home.php

Using dialogue journals

Dialogue journals are written conversations between the teacher and each individual student. Dialogue journals provide an opportunity for teachers to model language usage and written form without directly correcting student language. Students can draw on the teacher model and their own oral language competence to construct written language that serves an immediate and personal purpose. Some students may start with paper journals, others, with digital journals. Digital responses could be posted on a blogging site or wiki with settings for only the teacher to see and comment on.

Book Talks/Videos

Use flip video, Applied Vision4 (software on school computers), Voki, or camcorder to record student book talks. Character talks, opinions about books

or content specific talks are ideas.

Voki

Voki is a free service that allows you to create personalized speaking avatars and use them on your blog, for story retelling and character descriptions - need a free account (you may use Mrs. Tush's account)

Bubble.Us

Brainstorm online with bubbl.us. Easily create colorful mindmaps to print or share with others. They can be saved as JPEG OR PNG. Take your mind map and create a story from it.

Blabberize

Take a picture and let it do the talking. Save as a JPEG and embed it into your Blog or add it to your movie.

Prezi

This is a fun and creative way to build a presentation. Some templates are available.

http://interactives.mped.org/view_interactive.aspx?id=110&title

Comic Creator

Create comics online. Graphic novels are a great way to get a book into the hands of reluctant readers. Visual connections will help your students develop their writing skills too.

http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/

http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/venn-diagram-circles-30006.html

Online Diamante Poem

The tool provides definitions of the different parts of speech students use in composing the poems, reinforcing the connection between word study and writing. It also includes prompts to write and revise poems, thus reinforcing elements of the writing process. Students can save their draft diamante poems to revise later, and save and print their finished diamante poems.

http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/diamante-poems-30053.html

Writing Poetry with Rebus and Rhyme

If you've ever drawn a heart for the word "love," you've written a rebus. Rebus, writing which substitutes images for words in the text, is used by authors to write books for young readers able to identify only a limited number of words, so why not use this same technique to teach writing?
Students are first introduced to a variety of books using rebus writing. They then brainstorm lists of rhyming words that they could use in their own rebus poems. Finally, students create their own rebus poems and share them with an audience.

Timeline

Students can generate descriptive timelines that can be plotted with their choice of units of measure (date, time, event, entry, or other). Good for organizing and summarizing.

http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/timeline-30007.html

* Cube Creator

http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/cube_creator/

Writing Prompts and Ideas

Resources for providing ideas for writing in your classroom.

http://wvde.state.wv.us/strategybank/TheWritingProcess.html

Invisible Writing

Students can practice prewriting with “invisible writing.” Have
students sit at a computer with a word processing program. Turn off the monitors. Ask
students to write using the word processors for 1 to 3 minutes. With the monitors off, the
students will not be able to see the text. With practice, students will develop better
fluency, free themselves from compulsively fixing typos, stop losing their train of thought
when writing, be interested to see what they had to say, and generate more thoughtful text.

Media Literacy

Groups of students can write about a technology-related
product from the point of view of the writer, artist, actor, manufacturer, advertiser, or store
owner. In these roles, students then write out a plan or strategy for accomplishing their
particular goals of selling their product. Students can give a “sales pitch” PowerPoint
presentation, develop a video, create a web site for product information, or a brochure to
distribute to an audience. Students could design a product logo or take pictures of their
product. Presentations could be videotaped.

Story Telling

Publishing student writing encourages the reluctant, struggling writer, builds self confidence,
rewards interest, and promotes a positive attitude toward writing. Teachers can
publish student writings on the web or in a class newsletter.

Story Starters... Upper Elementary

Read the story and choose-your-own-path adventure story- add to
the tale whereever you like.

http://www.coder.com/creations/tale/stacks.html

When students create a story they can choose a format of: notebook, letter, newspaper or postcard. The story is printable.
